At Paws we are always looking for ways to better our dog’s diet. Aside from feeding a quality dog food, supplements can also be beneficial for your dog’s health. If kibble is your dog’s main source of sustenance, fish oil can be a great way to balance out your dog’s diet. EPA and DHA, the omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil, provide many health benefits including:

– Improvement of the skin and coat
– Regulating the immune system
– Ease inflammation for conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease and arthritis
– Assisting with weight loss
– Assisting with chronic disease, stress, or injury

Liquid fish oil supplements are packaged in individual capsules or bottled. Either way, fish oil should be stored in dark, sealed bottles and kept out of the heat. Bottled fish oil should be kept in the refrigerator and used within one to two months of purchase. If the supplement gives off an unusual or sour smell, toss it. You can use supplements that are intended for humans or dogs, however, many experts suggest that feeding your dog fresh fish is more beneficial.

As with all supplements, there are things to consider before adding fish oil to your pups diet. If your dog is fed a raw diet of mostly grass-fed protein, he may not need any additional omega-3s. Too much can be a bad thing, the most common risk being a gain in weight. It’s important to do your homework when choosing a brand or manufacturer of fish oil. Make sure you are purchasing a safe, nutrient-rich supplement. As always, consult with your vet to determine if adding a fish oil supplement or fresh fish is right for your pup’s diet.

Adding a new furry member to the family is an exciting experience, but the process can be a bit confusing for first time dog owners. There are so many things to consider; what kind of dog is right for the family, what kind of training will the dog be given, and what will the dog’s name be? One of the most important decisions that doesn’t get much thought is whether

the dog will be purchased or rescued. Many families decide on the type of dog, do a quick internet search, then purchase the dog without a second a thought. Here are some reasons why we think adopting is the best!

1. Money Saver

Adopting a dog instead of buying one is usually much cheaper. Breeders and pet stores often charge a fortune (we’re talking a few thousand dollars) for purebreds and for what they call “designer” breeds. Shelters and rescue groups charge an adoption fee that averages between $100 to $400.

2. You Become a Hero

When you adopt a dog you are saving the life of a homeless animal that may have otherwise been euthanized. When purchasing a dog from a pet store you are unfortunately most likely supporting a puppy mill, in which dogs are looked at as breeding machines/money makers, treated poorly, and kept in unsanitary conditions. When adopting, the fees you pay go toward the cost of medical bills, food, and shelter for future rescue dogs.

3. Health Checked

Dogs from shelters come spayed or neutered, are fully vaccinated, and (usually) microchipped. Dogs in shelters get a check up from a qualified veterinarian. Should any health issues arise while the dog is at the shelter, the proper veterinary care would be given.

4. Dogs of All Shapes, Sizes, and Breeds to Pick From

There are millions of dogs in shelters waiting for their forever homes. An estimated 6 to 8 million dogs and cats enter shelters each year. Don’t dismiss all shelter dogs as bad-behaved or unwanted. Many people agree that shelter dogs make amazing pets. Having a specific breed in mind is no excuse either –25% of shelter dogs are purebred.

An estimated 3 to 4 million shelter dogs and cats are euthanized each year simply because there is not enough room to accommodate for every homeless animal. This is why we are so passionate about adoption and rescue. Whether an animal was a mutt found as a stray, a purebred surrendered from a previous owner, has 3 legs, or comes with a quirky personality, they all deserve the best chance at life that they can!
